The Curtis J. Schmidt Award recognizes commitment and excellence in the engagement and education of the public regarding Kansas’ herpetofauna.
The Schmidt Award is given, in conjunction with the KHS Annual Meeting, to an individual or organization that has been nominated by a KHS member and selected from among all nominations by the KHS Awards Committee.
The winner of the Schmidt Award will receive an engraved plaque and a monetary award, not to be less than $500.
Curtis J. Schmidt passed away on 16 June 2022. Curtis joined the KHS in 1992. He served on several committees, was the Editor (2010-2016) and the President twice (2006, 2019). Curtis received a BS (1999) and MS (2004) from Fort Hays State University. In May 2007, Curtis became the first Zoological Collections Manager at the Sternberg Museum.
